I don’t know what else you call people who fly passenger jets into office buildings; who rape women in front of their husbands and children, and execute their opponents in acid baths; who seek to spread tyrannical and archaic religious regimes that enslave women and stifle fundamental freedoms. Who want to dominate the world’s primary oil fields with nuclear weapons.

Great find. Although the 'faith in the American people' line has had me thinking for quite a spell. This may be an uncomfortable question, but it is one that your post brings up. Was (is) Bin Laden right? Using historical standards, our losses are minimal, yet we don't appear to have the stomach for a protracted fight.
The only way we could possibly fight a protracted war is with a Democratic administration. But even then I wonder.
December 7, 1941, US gets into WWII. August 14, 1945, Japan surrenders. About 3 years 8 months.
March 20, 2003, US invades Iraq. Today, still fighting. About 3 years 10 months.
I think we have a protracted fight.
Bad comparison. There are three times as many Americans now and the casualties in Iraq are a 1,000th of WWII. That's the problem with this debate. People distort/misremember facts from 3 years as well as 60 years ago to legitimize opinions fitting to their politics.
I am not distorting anything, or making any political statement. The reference to WWII was simply to show how much time was involved in what most would consider to be "a protracted fight."
"Protracted" is the point at issue--at least the one I addressed. Based solely on time, this matter has already become protracted. Far more so if measured from 9/11/01.
I agree that there is doubt about whether or not the American people will support it being further protracted.
Other than defining what the word protracted means, the two conflicts are so different that only someone blinded by ideology would make the comparison. We lost more people in an hour of WWII than the entire Iraq war. If WWII was a “fight” then Iraq is just a finger flick. The WWII/Iraq comparison is similar in debate style to the Hitler/Bush comparisons.
